The Ward 8 is a refreshingly citrus cocktail that’s not too sour, but not overbearingly sweet. The rye balances out what could be a very sour drink with just enough spiciness. This is a historical cocktail, with a history as far back as 1898 and the associated lore to match. I’ll save that for the history sites, just know that this drink is deliciously drinkable, and comes out looking pretty nice as well.
Ingredients:
- 2 oz Templeton’s Rye
- 1 half of a lemon
- 1/2 oz orange juice
- 1 dash of grenadine (roughly a teaspoon)
Squeeze the lemon half to yield 1/2 oz of juice, then shake together with the rye, orange juice, and grenadine. Strain into a coupe glass and garnish with a maraschino cherry, and in this case, some lemon peel.
