When I was a kid I loved Terry’s Chocolate Oranges, and not just because the label says “Whack and Unwrap”.
The instructions seem pretty simple.
I usually got these guys around the holiday season, and the orange-milk-chocolate flavor is something that’s been ingrained into my taste buds for quite a few years. Coming into the holiday season I wanted to try to replicate that flavor, and what better way than to use Durham Distillery’s Damn Fine Liqueurs! The Damn Fine Chocolate liqueur is made from Videri chocolate, right up the street in Raleigh, NC, and is creamy-smooth, chocolatey goodness. (You can buy it here)
Initial impressions of this cocktail are that it definitely comes off with a lot of orange. If you want to go more towards the chocolate you can play with the ratios, and maybe halve the amount of bitters. I liked it the way it was, but you’ll have to try it and see for yourself.
Ingredients:
- 2 oz Durham Distillery Damn Fine Chocolate Liqueur
- 1 oz Redemption Rye
- 2 oz Orange Juice
- 2 dashes Hella Orange bitters
Add all ingredients in a shaker over ice, shake it up, and strain into a glass. For mine I rimmed the glass in chocolate syrup, and garnished with an orange slice. I definitely recommend using the chocolate rim, since it adds even more to the experience reminiscent of the chocolate orange. Let me know what you think!
