There’s a cocktail floating around out there called “Blackberry on Rye”, but I haven’t been able to find the defined standard. The base ingredients seem to be the same: rye whiskey, lemon juice, and blackberries. Some have simple syrup, some have red wine, some have mint…the list goes on. Since I love my Punt E Mes, and I love my Crude bitters, I threw this take on Blackberry on Rye together to see how it would go. It turned out well, with one minor tweak – I recommend adding 1/2 oz if simple syrup to balance the lemon juice.
Ingredients:
- 1 oz Templeton Rye
- 3/4 oz Punt E Mes
- 1/2 oz fresh squeezed lemon juice (half a lemon)
- 1/2 oz simple syrup
- Handful of blackberries
- 2 sprigs of rosemary
- Crude “Bitterless Marriage” bitters
-Start by muddling the blackberries, and then adding the rosemary and muddling that as well.
-Add the lemon juice, Rye, Punt E Mes, and simple syrup
-Drop in two dashes of Crude bitters, in this case “Bitterless Marriage”
-Shake over ice and double strain into your glass. You will want to double strain this because of all the blackberry seeds that will be left behind after the muddling!
-Garnish with blackberries and lemon peel, or add a sprig of rosemary.
