The end of summer is a great time to take advantage of berries and introduce them to the warmer flavors of darker drinks. Early fall is one of my favorite times, and it gives me a good excuse to blend berries and bourbon for a delicious early autumn drink.
Ingredients:
- Handful of blackberries (half cup)
- Two sprigs of rosemary
- Half a lime
- 1 oz Simple Syrup
- 2 oz Eagle Rare or other bourbon
- 1/2 oz Punt E Mes or other vermouth
-Begin by muddling a small handful (5-6) blackberries with two sprigs of rosemary.
-Add 1/2 oz of fresh squeezed lime juice (half a lime), and 1 oz of simple syrup. You can vary the amount of simple syrup if you like a sweeter drink.
-Add 2 oz of your bourbon of choice, and 1/2-3/4 oz of vermouth. I chose Punt E Mes because it is more complex than regular vermouth, and it goes along nicely with the blackberry flavors.
-Shake and strain into a coupe.
Garnish as you like – obviously a blackberry isn’t a bad choice!
